Swordsmith Index: Fujishiro/Toko Taikan rating clean-up

Hi All,

While going through the smiths of Aoe school in Swordsmith Index I once again was reminded of noisy/wrong/questionable smith ratings (Fujishiro/Toko Taikan) which still exist in the database. It was always in my list of things to clean up and now it's time. I'm going to archive and remove the following information:

  • Fujishiro ratings for smiths which don't have references to Fujishiro's Nihon Toko Jiten populated.
  • Toko Taikan ratings for smiths which don't have references to Toko Taikan populated.

This data was a part of initial database upload, I don't know/remember where it came from and hence this data can't be verified. Moreover, I noticed on numerous occasions that these values are not in line with the original books, with no traceability as of why these ratings were changed. Data quality is one of my highest priorities while working on Nihonto Club resources and I believe it's a step in the right direction.

Once this is done, eventually someone can go through the books and confirm/fix the remaining ratings (Hawley ratings are 99% correct, even though they are the least useful ones).

I would appreciate your feedback on this matter.

Regards,
Stan

Kanji on shirasaya

Hello,

Please help to translate kanji on shirasaya (sayagaki).

And if possible, few words about blade.
It is mumei wakizashi, nagasa 14.4 inches.

Thank you,

19th Century Tanto

Hey all! Here's my second sword I have questions on. (Also, sorry Stan, I didn't read the message about uploading pictures till after I posted my first post.)

This one is a little tanto I picked up a couple years ago. It's got a kozuka with it and a tsuba, but it's missing a lot of the other fittings. The tsuba has gold inlay and the kabuto-gane has a clan mon painted in gold on it. I've managed to identify it as a clan named the Mokko...but I've been unable to discover anything else about the clan. I think it's dated between 1800 and 1820.

aluminum handle sword

Greetings all! My name is Cameron and I live in Tacoma, WA. I posted on this site a few years back when I accidentally bought a few fake World War 2 swords. Since then I've learned a little bit more and have got some pieces that I wanted to share with you guys. I wanted your opinions on two of them. This is the first one that I have and the little bit that I know about it is that it's a sword that was made in the closing days of the war when resources were scarce.

Sword Identification

I am in need of help with a sword identication. I recently obtained a sword and is of great mystery to me. It is a katanna and I believe it's not very old. It has two holes in the tang and is made of damascus steel. I also believe that the stamp is 摂津守 源忠行,Settsu no Kami Minamoto Tadayuki. But I am not sure. I will load a picture of the tang and if anyone can help contact me at troymeaux@hotamil.com. Thank you very much.

New guy questions

Hello,

I'm a new member to the group, but have long been a fan of Japanese culture. By day I'm a Jr. High History/Science teacher and coach, in Southern IL area. I'm about as new to Nihonto as it gets though. I ordered two books on Ebay to start off with.

Tanto from 13th century needs identification

This sword was given to me by my father. It was first handed down to him by his father who was a Lt. Colonel in the U. S. Army and commander in charge of all land and air transportation throughout Japan. For his great help and efforts after WWII, a high-ranking Japanese officer presented him this tanto as a gift. It was said to be from a famous sword maker from the 13th century. It was once identified and certified, yet the papers were lost with my grandfather. I was hoping someone could help me identify it once again, so I may display it with its full honors.

Thank you all!

Any help translating and identifying the pieces would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance
