any ideas about this sword?

Hi Stan, Pete and all,

I had recently acquired this sword, again I am lost with the translation on the tang, as the kanji characters have been covered with thick black rust and are very faint to visualize .....I tried to get a close up shot of it. anyway hope anyone could help me, any ideas??? Thanks again.

Sorry. I think the only hope for reading it is for someone to hold it in their hands to change the lighting in various ways, etc.
