Nihonto |
First off I would like to express my gratitude to those who provide this site free of charge and those who offer their services to folks like myself. I have received several opinions and learned quite a bit trying to research my sword. I am beginning to realize that the nihonto study is a life long endeavor, governed by educated opinions and exposure to high end swords. For the "new guys" just breaking into the field, ID'ing a sword is a daunting task, and the possibility exists that a concrete undisputed attribution may or may not obtainable. |

Hello- I found this tanto while cleaning out an old storage shed. The blade has been abused, but the signature is very clear. The second character is possibly "hisa" but I have not been able to find one like the first kanji. Any help appreciated. Rich |

Hello to all- I am a new member and I have a question about a wakizashi that I have owned for over 30 years. It is in the shinobu-zukuri form. It is signed "Yoshikane" with only two characters. The blade is 38.2 cm long and sori is .8cm (8mm). The hamon is hard to see but looks to be gunome near the tip. The tang has some recent disturbance to the patina under the tsuka. Between the munemachi and the mekugi-ana there is a groove that appears to have been caused by a loose tsuba while the sword was worn. The groove wraps completely around the nakago and is heavily patinated. |

I tried to buy one of two World War 2 Shin Gunto in modern mounts from a web site called Ryujin Swords which had two for sale at £400 each which being a pensioner I found that I could just about afford. The site also stated that you could pay for the swords with a 25% deposit and then pay off the balance when required but the sword would stay the property of Ryujin Swords until fully paid for. I though this would be ideal for me as i wouldn't have to fork out the entire amount in one go. |

Hello all!! Some friends posted an image of a sword on facebook, the sword was handed down from a father to son to son, the Sword was brought to the United states from japan, after WWII. The person in ownership of the sword would like to know what the writing says on it. Can anyone help me translate this? |

Hey everyone, I got this sword that came from my grandpa and just now I start wandering where it came from and if is even real. If anyone could help me find out anything about this sword I would appreciate very much My best regards Ps: Don't know where my grandpa got it, not even when. But if I were guess, this sword is more old than 40y (if help anything), and from what I know, no one has cleaned it. |

These two swords appear to belong to a set. As far as I am aware, they are ceremonial swords of some type. |

This is the first Sword I am trying to get identified. Images 350-358 are from the second sword I am trying to identify. This second sword was brought back to Canada on the Abyssinia which traveled back and forth from Vancouver to Yokohama approx. 1887. |
