Description:
Material: shakudo The design is based on Tanabata festival themes. The most popular version of the origins of the Tanabata festival is as follows: Orihime (織姫 Weaving Princess), daughter of the Tentei (天帝 Sky King, or the universe itself), wove beautiful clothes by the bank of the Amanogawa (天の川 Milky Way, lit. "heavenly river"). Her father loved the cloth that she wove and so she worked very hard every day to weave it. However, Orihime was sad that because of her hard work she could never meet and fall in love with anyone. Concerned about his daughter, Tentei arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi (彦星 Cowman/Cowherd Star, or literally Boy Star) (also referred to as Kengyū (牽牛)) who lived and worked on the other side of the Amanogawa. When the two met, they fell instantly in love with each other and married shortly thereafter. However, once married, Orihime no longer would weave cloth for Tentei and Hikoboshi allowed his cows to stray all over Heaven. In anger, Tentei separated the two lovers across the Amanogawa and forbade them to meet. Orihime became despondent at the loss of her husband and asked her father to let them meet again. Tentei was moved by his daughter's tears and allowed the two to meet on the 7th day of the 7th month if she worked hard and finished her weaving. The first time they tried to meet, however, they found that they could not cross the river because there was no bridge. Orihime cried so much that a flock of magpies came and promised to make a bridge with their wings so that she could cross the river. It is said that if it rains on Tanabata, the magpies cannot come and the two lovers must wait until another year to meet. (see more here) If you are interested in Tanabata themed tsuba, you may find an example here. DimensionsFuchi: Size: 3.8 x 2.2 x 1.2cm Kashira: Size: 3.3 x 1.7x 0.7cm |

Hi all. |
|||
I was looking at a Satsuma rebellion sword and it had a strange same substitute. It sold for more than I could afford, but I'm still curious what it is. Any ideas? |

Hi, I was sent these pictures and was wondering if anyone would be willing to give an educated guess as to the era? The blade is unsigned and suriage. The sword featured in the documentary “A Doctor’s Sword” which is a fascinating story. The pictures might not be ideal but any feeling, even if only Koto or Shinto would be a help. Many thanks. |

I am new to Nihinto Club and have minimal knowledge of and experience with Japanese swords but am trying to become more educated and need some help with a WW2 Japanese sword that I recently acquired. It apparently was inherited from the previous owners grandfather who brought the sword back from Japan at the end of WW2. Other than that, she had no other knowledge or information regarding the sword. The nakago is signed but I am not yet experienced at kanji translation. |

Dear All, I have just picked this Amahide up - what do you think? The horimono is very well cut and good quality - a rare sword nowadays... Any comments are welcome :) Kind regards, Neil |
|||
Dear All, I have numerous Koaisshin Mantetsu's in my collection and one of these has some unusual markings applied to the Saya (please see pictures). There is a two character script and the two symbols shown in the photographs. The symbols and script are, I believe, totally contemporary as this example came directly from a prisoner of war some 20 odd years ago. Can anybody shed some light on these symbols? They are painted on in an enamel type paint and very interesting. I look forward to any and all ideas and comments. Kind regards, Neil |

Dear All, Can anyone assist me with this Mei? I have bought this Wakisashi and the Mei looks to be well cut... Any assistance would be very much appreciated. Kind regards, Neil |

Hi, I’ve a question about gimei blades, or more precisely blades with signatures by notable smiths with no authentication. What are the factors to consider in determining if a blade is gimei? If a sword has the characteristics you would expect of the smith in question are there other warning signs of a gimei blade, or is sending it to a shinsa the only way to be confident? |
