This Wakizashi is papered to the 3rd generation Kanemoto who is also the 2nd generation magaroku kanemoto.
The wakizashi is mumei-o'suriage and mounted in shirasaya and original koshirae.
The appraisal paper was done by the late Dr Tokuno Kasuo.
The shape is described as shinogi-zukuri, low midore-mine, chu kissaki.
The jihada ko-itame base mixed with mokume, and a milky shadow from the mine.
Hamon is nioi-deki gunome having acute/pointed tempereed three cedar hamon.
Nakago is o'suriage mumei.
Era ten-sho 1573.
School 3rd generation magaroku kanemoto.
Length 44.8cm. Sorui 1.25cm.
Dr Tokuno said that the blade could be either 3rd or 4th generation but certainly made well before the regulated sanbonsugi or three cedar hamon that later generations of kanemoto were famous for.
Dr Tokuno also said the ji and the ha showed skillful workmanship.
Dr Tokuno thoughts were that this koshirae was possibly indicate for a castle guard captain or similar, the tsuba is reminicent of the tokogawa.
Polish was done by Mr Sasaki of Tokyo.

The Shakudo fuchi is decorated with Takabori carving and gold inlay on Migakiji plate, design of Mitsudomoe-mon and Kiri-mon.

Nakago: Patina on nakago is damaged by sand paper. Remaining patina has deep blackish colour. Yasurime is katte sagari. Nakagojiri type is kiri, with traces of rough cutting (different to other sides of nakago), which would suggest that the blade is suriage.

Hamon: gunome-midare can be seen all along the ha. Detailed features are hard to notice.

The blade is covered with shallow pitting, similar to old blades which didn't rust but remained without re-polishing for a long period of time. Lines are very elegant and neatly done. All surfaces seemed to have a very smooth finish, which suggest a good polisher's work damaged over time.

Jihada: There is a tobiyaki on the shinogi line. Muneyaki can also be seen all along the mune.
Nakago: Shape and condition of nakago could suggest that it's o-suriage, shortened from katana or wakizashi.
Hamon: Mainly ko-midare in thick nie deki with gunome midare in monouchi. Few nie sake can be seen, as well as kuichigaiba closer to yokote.

This is a Jumyō wakizashi or katana, shortened to a tanto size in mid-late Edo. It could be one of those 'boy swords', especially looking at the way it's been mounted.
