Hello all. I recently acquired 3 swords and need help translating the Mei. I'll put each in a seperate post. The first sword is a wakizashi. It has Mei on both the Ura and Omote. From what I can tell, the Ura Mei reads "A day in the 8th month of the 5th year of Kaei." I'm not sure what the character between year and the number 5 is. I haven't found much for the Omote Mei yet. My best guess for the name is "MATSUO, Sukenojo." Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Correct on the KAEI. As for the year, I think it's not "5", but instead a zodiac counter type of thing. Would need to research it, but I'll leave that to you :-) .
Didn't make much progress on the name - it's unusual.
How about pictures of the rest of the blade, so that we can rule out "Chinese fake with a weird Chinese signature"?
