It's a fake, sorry

It's a fake, sorry.

http://www.japanesesword.com/ usually has many low-to-medium grade gunto and they are all real. I would highly recommend going there to learn what real WWII swords look like.

Real or Fake?

As I have said I wouldn't recommend ebay as a good place to buy,. Putting all other risks aside, photos don't always tell the whole story. Having said that there are three NCO swords that I'd be interested to hear an opinion on.

Real or Fake?

ebay

Well to me the 3rd one looks real but I am such a noob when it comes to Japanese swords. I gave read all,the links to info on Gunto's you guys have given me. But to be honest I'm afraid I am going to spend a small fortune on some Chinese fake.

2nd and 3rd

The 2nd and 3rd look like real NCO's to me. The first one is no longer listed.
The 3rd one looks like real nice condition.
The 2nd one has a not-so-common arsenal mark (the star-shaped stamp on the fuchi).

Does the mismatch serial numbers on blade and scabbard hurt the value?

NCO Swords

The mismatched serial numbers would reduce the value, it means they weren't issued together and so it's not original. The leather is also missing from the sheath. If it is real it's not a bad price. I'd expect a good original NCO sword in the UK to be between £750 and £1000 ($1170 to $1560) so $900 isn't too bad for a less than perfect one. The cheeper one is quite rough, someone has gone at the blade which is a shame.

leather

I don't remember that NCO's had any leather - the one I had many years ago certainly didn't. But I could be wrong...
I agree that mismatched numbers hurts the value, as it does with most types of militaria.

New collectors: Remember that an NCO is not any type of "Nihonto" - it is strictly a military item, like a bayonet.

Leather

You know Pete having googled a bit I think you're right. I have one with leather on the top half of the sheath so I assumed they all should, but I can't find pictures of any others that have. My bad.
