Naganao (NAG367)

  • Listed in Hawley under Eishō , kazarena , 10 years 15 weeks ago

Listed in Hawley under Eishō era (1504). It must be a mistake.

Munetsune (MUN598)

Moritsune (MOR402)

  • This is an aggregate record , kazarena , 10 years 15 weeks ago

This is an aggregate record in Hawley for MOR403, MOR404.

Ariyuki (ARI254)

  • Hawley reference , kazarena , 10 years 17 weeks ago

Hawley lists this smith as 1190-1222, Masatsune group. I wasn't able to find any reference to such smith.

Sadamune (SAD539)

Moritoshi (MOR325)

  • Kōan , kazarena , 10 years 22 weeks ago

Fujishiro is the only source which attributes Moritoshi to Kōan era [1], but it's clearly the same smith as MOR323.

Kaneuji (KAN2843)

  • Yamato Shizu vs Naoe Shizu vs Kaneuji , kazarena , 10 years 25 weeks ago

Since I'm always forgetting the convention around naming the works of Shizu, here's the explanation for the record:

Yamato Shizu: used to describe the work of Kaneuji, and of his students while working in the Yamato tradition.

Shizu: used to describe the work of Kaneuji after his trip to Kamakura to learn under Masamune. Afterwards, he settled in the village of Shizu in Mino province and changed the Kane character of his name.

Naoe Shizu: the students of Kaneuji after his name change and relocation to Mino.

Kaneuji: usually reserved to describe blades that bear the signature of Kaneuji (or to make a clear attribution to Kaneuji himself)

Kagehide (KAG9)

  • Extant works , kazarena , 10 years 49 weeks ago

According to Token Bijutsu 632 (Sep 2009), extant works of Kagehide are as follows:

    • 1 Juyo Bunkazai sword (SN: this must be Kuronbo-giri)
    • 2 Tokubetsu Juyo swords
    • 7 Juyo Token swords

Munesada (MUN356)

  • Munesada , kazarena , 10 years 50 weeks ago

Sesko lists 2 smiths called Munesada in Genryaku (1184) and Ninji (1240). But in Meikan there's only 1 record which lists Noda Gyōbu no Suke in Ninji. Hawley is following Meikan records.

Saneyuki (SAN376)

  • Bunpo , kazarena , 10 years 50 weeks ago

Hawley lists this smith in 1317 (Bunpo). I've chosen this record to describe Saneyuki of Einin (1293) in absence of any information about Saneyuki of Bunpo.

Kuniteru (KUN1279)

  • Rating , kazarena , 11 years 3 weeks ago

I took Hawley rating of 60 from KUN1281, which is the same Kuniteru. Original rating is 15.

Yoshikage (YOS1478)

Kiyomitsu (KIY233)

  • Kiyomitsu 6th , kazarena , 11 years 14 weeks ago

This record in Hawley clearly refers to Kiyomitsu of Tenshō (KIY238) in Nihonto Meikan (see the unique signature 加州泉住清光).

Hawley lists this smith to be active 1467-1510 and mixes in information for Kiyomitsu Shodai, i.e. being a son of Yukumitsu. This records fills the generation gap between Kiyomitsu Shodai and Nidai. It appears to be either Hawley's mistake or he possessed other information about some Kiyomitsu who was active between 1st and 2nd generations. I can't find any other references to such smith.

His real name was Ishida Zenzaemon. He joined Mishina school in Kyoto before he moved to Owari province.

If you appreciate Kinmichi and Mishina works, you can see the influences from Mishina in his works

    He also signed:

Sadayoshi (SAD846)

  • Hi Eric, Thank you for , admin , 12 years 8 weeks ago

    Hi Eric,

Thank you for providing more details about Sadayoshi. I've updated the active dates. I will also check the books and fill in any missing information.

    Regards,
    Stan

  • Active Dates , Eric , 12 years 8 weeks ago

Amada Sadayoshi (father of Amada Akitsugu, National Living Treasure) began making blades with his own Mei in 1931 and died in April 1938. Therefore his active dates should, perhaps be amended. It appears that prior to 1931 he was smithing blades, but for local dealers under other mei. See: http://www.456fis.org/YAMAMOTO_&THE%20SWARD_SMITH.htm There are other certainly other references to his death in 1938, though the question of what he was doing before 1931, is not, as far as I can see, referred to in English print or on the internet. I'd love to hear what anybody else has read in Japanese on the subject.

Katsuhisa (KAT57)

  • Katsukazu , kazarena , 12 years 8 weeks ago

    Listed in Hawley as Katsukazu.

Unshō (UNJ12)

  • Hawley , kazarena , 12 years 9 weeks ago

This smith (and few subsequent IDs) is listed as Unjō 雲上, but it's obvious from the context that it's 雲生.
