History

This blade was owned by Kurumaya Soketsu of Sakai of Sessen, hence the name. Kurumaya (active between Eiroku and Tenshō, 1558-1592) was one of the richest merchants in Sakai. Many warlords were leaving their swords as collateral for loans taken out to fund their military operations. It's been recorded that at some stage most of the famous swords were in his hands.

After the warring days many Daimyo went back to Sakai to buy back the blades and Oda Nobunaga is said to have purchased Kurumaya Tōshirō.

[1] doesn't mention how and where this blade was lost to fire.
