World War II sword fittings family mons

We have a family mon on the fuchi. Has a lot of gold highlights on it. We are wanting to find out if where it is located does indicate the rank of the officer or the rank in the family where the mon is. Do you know how to research who the officer was through the mon. It is off a WWII piece, shin-gunto fittings but higher grade fittings. There is a name scratched into it.

Mon

Hi Belinda,

Please attach photos of the mon and the name and I'll do my best to identify the name of the family. There are resources in the internet (I don't have any particular links but they are relatively easy to find) which provide lists of family mons. Depending on your mon it may or may not be useful because some mons were used by several different families. As for more detailed information, there are few books you may refer to.

Stan

mon

HI Stan.
the mon is Tachi Omodaka. Family Kinoshita and Mizuno family. found that on the internet. the name that is scratched into it is Hira-Sawa. The thing that i am interested in is the spot that the mon is placed in. As i was told by an military collector that it would be higher then a major because of the position of it. (on the fuchi) the standard world war fittings may be gold plated around the edges but this is very very thick with a silver mon on it. Couldn't get a good photo and not sure how to add them anyway. The dealer said that their was only around 1600 mons issued in wwII. Really trying to track the history of it. and find out what the owner did.

Any help or ideas would be great as i am stumped.

Thanks
Belinda
