not Japanese

It's not a Japanese sword.
Not sure if it's a completely different type of sword (i.e. from China), or a very poor imitation of a Japanese sword.

Katana Idenity

Hello Pete, thanks for the reply.
I was hoping for a bit more. We are assuming it's a "Knock off" but we were more curious about the "signature"? on the sword. Have you ever seen one like it before? We have tried to research the mark but have found no info on it but that does not surprise me.

kanji

The first character is "hachi", the number 8.
The third is "TOu / KATANA", meaning "sword".
So, it's probably a 'name for the sword', not a person's name.
