This old Wakasashi sword has a signature, can it be read?. Someone damaged the blade with what appears to be a wire brush or wheel. No grinding marks, but damage is done. See attached images.

something-HISA
Hi, The signature is poorly written. Last kanji is HISA. First two are SAOTO, which is 2/3 of the family name Saotome. Don't know what the 3rd kanji might be. Does not appear to be a legit signature.
No apparent yasuri-me (filemarks on the tang) (possible, but rare).
No apparent yokote on the tip (possible, but rare).
The mekugi-ana (peg hole) appears to have very sharp edges, which is suspicious (perhaps done recently with a drill - originals are punched).
A small HI (groove) on the blade that seems to disappear, next to the large HI.
The saya (scabbard) looks like a mess - did someone butcher it with black paint?
Not sure if it's a really poor blade in really bad condition, or a fake made to look like a really poor blade in really bad condition.
Sorry for being so negative, but the whole thing is very suspicious to me.
Pete
sword authenticity
Than you Pete, I believe you are correct that this sword is suspicious, so I appreciate all your input. Have nothing into it because I bought as if it were a fake with a few real bronze pieces. Did I pay too much at $10.00. THANKS.
